Although the creator of the show Stephen Hillenburg actually created the spongebob character back in 1984, the show wasn't created and released on television until May 1st, 1999. At the time, Stephen was teaching marine biology and had a great understanding of life under the sea. Making a children's show was pretty far removed from his daily life, but here's what happened. He became interested in animation, and back in the 1980's created his own comic book depicting the life of various sea animals. This eventually evolved into the characters we now watch on Spongebob Squarepants episodes. Its has quickly risen to become the most popular childrens show out there, almost on the same level as Sesame Street. As his skills in animation increased, he eventually landed a job working on Rocko's modern life. Once the show was cancelled in 1996, he saw the opportunity to bring his own idea to the table. To be honest the first year was low ratings, and Nickelodeon was considering cancelling the show. Luckily they waited just one more year, when the show developed a huge following. We are now in Season 8. What are Spongebob Episodes about?Spongebob squarepants and his marine friends live underwater, in a city called the "Bikini Bottom". Its the highest rated show on Nickelodeon, and the demand for new spongebob episodes, toys, and movies has no end. Spongebob is basically a very happy and optimistic sponge, who happens to live in a pineapple. Where stephen got this idea I have no idea, but apparantely the kids love it. Some other popular characters include his friend Patrick the starfish, and Sandy Cheeks.Typically an episode will center around Spongebob trying to find the secret key, which will allow him to enter into the sea kingdom. He faces many predators, sharks, whales, and other sea mammals. They want to protect the bounty. Spongebob remains optimistic that he'll find treasure. Music Featured in the Spongebob EpisodesMost of what you hear is Hawaiian steel guitar music, using mostly traditional hawaiian melodies and instruments. You'll notice in any production or media, the importance of matching the audio with the vibe. Spongebob does that well, as the music really sounds underwater, and silly as well.Derek Drymon, Stephen Hillenburg, Blaise Smith, and Derek Drymon composed the theme song, which sounds like a classic sea shanty tune. Even the pop singer Avril Lavigne covered the song for the spongebob squarepants movie. Of course, had it not been a highly popular show she would have laughed at the offer. An interesting tidbit, this is the only Nickelodeon television show which features lots of indie artists who are little known, and many alternative rock bands also received spots on the movie sound track. Very cool! I'm currently working on my own song which I hope is featured in one of the newer spongebob episodes! |
